The Legend of Kalijai
The origin of the Kalijai Temple is steeped in a poignant legend that dates back centuries. a young girl named Jaai was to be married to a boy from Parikud, a village on an island in Chilika Lake. Jaai, along with her father and other relatives and full of 'bhara' or offerings for the groom, set out on a boat to reach the groom's village . However, as they were crossing the lake, a severe storm erupted, causing the boat to capsize. While the others managed to swim to safety, Jaai was lost in the turbulent waters.
The grief-stricken father and relatives mourned her loss. Over time, local villagers began to believe that Jaai’s spirit had transformed into a goddess, protecting the lake and its people. They started worshipping her as Goddess Kalijai, a deity with the power to calm the waters and protect fishermen and travelers.
It is believed that even after her death, Jaai's voice could be heard on the island adjoining the whirlpool. Over time, people came to believe that Jaai had attained a spiritual state, or Moksha, during the incident and had reincarnated as a form of Goddess Kali. Thus, she is called and worshipped as Goddess Kalijai.
