Constructed in the 13th century under the patronage of King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is dedicated to Surya, the Sun God.

The temple is shaped like a colossal chariot with twelve intricately carved wheels and drawn by seven horses, capturing the essence of cosmic motion and the divine journey of the sun across the sky. ‘Odisha Ikat’ also known as “Bandha of Odisha”, is a resist dyeing technique. Since 2007, the “Bandha of Odisha” has been geographically identified. It is a process of tie-dying the wrap and weft threads, so that designs on the loom prior to weaving can be created. Because of its design process, it has been called “poetry on loom”.
