'Nātha' in sanskrit literally translates into 'Lord' or 'Protector' or 'master', it is in the name of the Lord Jagannath and his grand journey to the Maa Gundicha temple on his even grander chariots along with his siblings. This is the only time of the year when the Deity steps out of the temple to meet his devotees.

The Rathyatra is a grand celebration that holds immense cultural and religious significance in India. This annual Hindu festival is celebrated across the country with great pomp and show. The festival marks the journey of Lord Jaganath, his brother Lord Balabhadra, and sister Subhadra from their abode in the Jagannath Temple in Puri to their aunt's temple in Gundicha. The festival of Rathyatra has been celebrated for centuries, and the traditions and rituals that accompany it have been passed down from one generation to another.

The origins of Rathyatra can be traced back to ancient Hindu scriptures, particularly the Skanda Purana and the Brahma Purana, which describe Lord Jaganath's journey from his temple to visit his aunt's temple. It is said that Lord Jaganath, who is considered a form of Lord Vishnu, went on this journey with his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra, and thousands of devotees followed them.
